DMV POINT SYSTEM
When a New York State Driver reaches 11 points, Administrative Law Judges have the discretion to suspend/revoke your license.
Speeding (mph over posted limit/if no sign, in NYC, the default limit is 25 mpg since November 7th, 2014, prior to this date it was 30 mpg)
3 pts = 1 to 10 mph over
4 pts = 11 to 20 mph over
6 pts = 21 to 30 mph over
8 pts = 31 to 40 mph over
11 pts = more than 40 mph over, ie 41, 42, etc over
5 pts = reckless driving
5 pts = failure to stop for a School Bus, cell phone, operate electronic device
4 pts = following too closely (tailgating)
3 pts = failing to yield right of way
3 pts = violatons involving traffic signal (red light, red arrow, green arrow), stop sign, yield sign
3 pts = improper passing or lane use, fail to yield to emergency vehicle, move from lane unsafely
3 pts = leaving the scene of an incident involving property damage or injury to animal
3 pts = without seatbelt person under 16
2 pts = any other moving violation (disobey traffic device, improper turn, fail to comply with order)
0 pts = adult seatbelt
